How does acupuncture help relieve anxiety?
How does acupuncture help relieve anxiety?
Often, those who suffer from anxiety respond quickly to acupuncture and find it can be a very effective modality to use as part of their treatment plan.

How can acupuncture reset your nervous system?
Acupuncture
~ Down-regulates the body's stress response by balancing neurotransmitters & hormones.
(Stress triggers the production of certain hormones (cortisol and adrenaline) to enable the body to deal with stress accordingly. Chronic stress can reduce your serotonin levels, which is the hormone associated with happiness and feelings of well-being. Acupuncture can help balance these hormones and reduce anxiety symptoms.)

~ Calms the analytical brain responsible for worry

~ Stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system

~ Restores the immune system and decreases inflammation.

How long does it take for acupuncture to help anxiety?
The number of acupuncture sessions you’ll require depends on your personal constitution, medical history, the severity and occurrence of your anxiety and how quickly your body responds to the acupuncture treatment.
How often should you do acupuncture for anxiety?
You can experience relief within one or two treatments, and as with most chronic issues, it does take more time, lifestyle, and mindset changes to help the body make permanent changes. We generally recommend acupuncture visits one to two times a week for anxiety issues and the duration of treatment depends on how chronic the anxiety is, lifestyle factors, and whether you can reduce exposure to stressors that may be contributing to your stress and anxiety.
When you are able to go from appointment to appointment with greatly reduced or without the anxiety being activated, we then start to spread the treatments out.
During the treatments, Sonja will recommend lifestyle changes, offer and teach you tools to help manage triggers that activate the feelings of anxiousness. So while the acupuncture helps the body, we also address the mental and emotional levels so that you grow more empowered in navigating your life and having space for joy and peace.

Reducing our reactions to stress and anxiety can seem insurmountable when it has become chronic and has overtaken our lives to a point where we can not see a way out. This is because our bandwidth of tolerance has decreased; things we were previously able to take in stride now seem to be piled up and intolerable. Cultivating peace and harmony in our lives through lifestyle, nutrition choices, mindset and being aware of where we are at on a daily basis provides us with our personal baseline of wellness so we can do what we need to take care of ourselves when we see things might be shifting out of balance. These practices and changes don’t have to be done all at once. Try adding ones that are manageable, then, when you have that down, play with adding the next one that seems manageable. Please don’t beat yourself up, nurture yourself through the process like you would someone you feel very gentle towards, and get support where and when it feels supportive. If you are working with a practitioner, feel free to let them know what kind of support you feel empowered by.
